Clinical Indications
Renal artery stenosis — narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to the kidneys — is one of the most common correctable causes of resistant hypertension. If your blood pressure remains elevated despite two or three medications, or if your physician suspects a renovascular cause, a renal artery duplex is a non-invasive first-line imaging study.
The duplex evaluates peak systolic velocity and renal-to-aortic velocity ratios in both renal arteries, detects turbulent flow indicating hemodynamically significant stenosis, and assesses kidney size and parenchymal architecture. This is a clinically dense study that provides the cardiologist and nephrologist with actionable data — including whether the stenosis is severe enough to consider revascularization.
