If you've never had an ultrasound outside a hospital, here's exactly what to expect. Nothing about it should be a surprise.

  1. Finding us

    We're at 170 US Route 1, Suite 190, Falmouth, ME 04105. Park anywhere in the shared lot out front; it's free. Suite 190 is on the ground floor, with no steps.

  2. Before you come

    Wear something loose and comfortable. For an AAA or renal study, please don't eat for 4 hours beforehand; water and your usual medications are fine. The other studies need no preparation.

  3. How long it takes

    Plan on 45 minutes for a single study, and longer for a package.

  4. Privacy

    It's a private room with the door closed. You're welcome to bring a family member or friend to sit in with you.

  5. Watching the screen

    I turn the screen so you can watch, and I tell you what we're looking at as we go: the valves opening, blood moving through an artery. The findings themselves come from the cardiologist, in your report.

  6. Your report

    Within 24–48 hours you get a written report in plain language: what was measured, what is normal, what is not, and what to raise with your doctor.

  2. The ultrasound itself

    I set up in about five minutes. Warm gel, a probe moved across the skin — nothing injected, nothing pinches. Wear something loose and plan on 45 minutes.

  3. A cardiologist reads it

    Your images go to Dr. Gandelman, the IAC-accredited cardiologist who reads every study. Real measurements — chamber sizes, valve function, blood flow velocities — not a glance at pictures.

  4. Your report arrives

    A written report in plain language: what was measured, what is normal, what is not, and what to raise with your doctor. Yours to keep and share with any physician you choose.

A Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) and Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT), credentialed by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), with nearly 20 years of cardiovascular imaging. He has led IAC lab accreditation for hundreds of cardiac and vascular laboratories nationwide, performed and supervised thousands of studies across echocardiography, stress echocardiography and vascular ultrasound, and has direct experience with surgical guidance for invasive vascular procedures. He has mentored hundreds of physicians, medical students and sonographers, and is a member of the American Society of Echocardiography and the Society for Vascular Ultrasound.

A board-certified cardiologist with subspecialty certification in echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and of the American Society of Echocardiography, and credentialed in vascular ultrasound as a Registered Vascular Technologist and Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RVT, RPVI). His lab holds IAC accreditation, the same standard required of hospital echo and vascular labs. MD from New York Medical College and MPH from Cornell University. Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at New York Medical College and Clinical Instructor at Yale New Haven Hospital and Cornell University Hospital. He reads every study.

Most take place at our Falmouth imaging center, 170 US Route 1, Suite 190, Falmouth, ME 04105. We also come to homes, workplaces and care facilities across Southern and Midcoast Maine.

Which diagnostic studies do you offer?

Echocardiograms, carotid duplex ultrasound, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) ultrasound, lower extremity arterial and venous duplex, and renal artery duplex. Packages combine the studies that matter most for a particular health concern.

Is this the same standard as a hospital study?

Yes. Your study is interpreted by Dr. Glenn Gandelman, MD, FACC — a board-certified cardiologist whose lab holds IAC accreditation, the same standard required of hospital echo and vascular labs. Our sonographer is a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) and Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT), credentialed by ARDMS — the same certifications required in hospital settings. The location changes; the clinical standard does not.
