The Study
An AAA screening is an ultrasound of the abdominal aorta, the main artery running down through your abdomen. It measures the diameter of that vessel. An aneurysm is a widening of it, and it produces no symptoms at all until it becomes an emergency, which is the entire reason it is screened for rather than waited on. The scan takes about 15 minutes and needs no needles and no radiation.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends one-time screening by ultrasound for men aged 65 to 75 who have ever smoked. For men in that age range who have never smoked, it advises selective screening based on individual risk. Whether it applies to you is a decision for your physician, not for us.
