Together they give a complete picture of both structure and function - something no single-mode test provides. The exam focuses primarily on the carotid bifurcation, where the common carotid artery splits into the internal and external branches, because that's where turbulent flow concentrates plaque.
Intima-media thickness (IMT). The intima and media are the two innermost layers of the arterial wall. Increased IMT is an early marker of atherosclerosis, detectable before any plaque is visible. An elevated IMT without discrete plaque tells us the process has started.
Plaque characterization. B-mode imaging visualizes plaque directly. We can see how large it is, where it's located, and something about its composition.
