The Study
A carotid ultrasound scans the two arteries in your neck that carry blood to your brain. It looks for plaque and narrowing that raise stroke risk. The study takes 30 to 45 minutes and uses sound waves only — no needles, no radiation.

A carotid bruit is turbulent flow through a narrowed artery, heard with a stethoscope. A carotid duplex ultrasound is the standard next step to measure how much narrowing is actually there.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force does not recommend screening the general adult population without symptoms. Screening is generally directed at people with established risk factors, such as a prior TIA or stroke, a carotid bruit, or significant vascular disease elsewhere. Your physician is the right person to decide whether it applies to you.
