Every study is the same study we always perform — same equipment, same protocol, read by the same board-certified cardiologist. The price is lower because we are opening a new office, not because the study is smaller.
Heart, neck and abdomen — the three places cardiovascular disease starts without telling you. Each answers a question the other two cannot, and none of them is answered by a physical, an EKG or bloodwork.
Measures ejection fraction — the share of blood your heart pushes out with each beat — and shows whether the muscle has thickened from years of pressure, or whether a valve has begun to narrow or leak. Heart failure does not arrive one afternoon. It builds quietly over years while you feel entirely normal, and this is the study that watches it build. A stethoscope and an EKG cannot see any of it.
The two arteries in your neck carry most of the blood your brain receives. One thing: do not eat for 4 hours before you come in. The aortic scan looks through your abdomen, and food in the way makes the image much harder to read. Water is fine and you should take your usual medications as normal. Wear loose, comfortable clothes. That is all — no needles, no radiation, no medication changes, and you can drive yourself home afterwards.
It is part of the package rather than advice about what any one person needs. The USPSTF indicates one-time aortic screening for men 65 to 75 who have ever smoked; the package includes it for men and women alike, as a baseline. If it is not appropriate for you we will say so at the appointment, and the price is the same either way.
