Stroke Prevention
Ultrasound

Combines a carotid Doppler with intimal media thickness measurement (IMT) and an echocardiogram to assess your arteries and heart function — identifying early signs of plaque buildup, narrowing, or heart-related stroke risk, often before any symptoms appear.

The Reason for Two

Why This Package Is Two Scans, Not One

A stroke happens when blood stops reaching part of your brain. There is more than one way for that to happen — and the two most common causes sit in two different places.

Plaque in the neck arteries

The carotid arteries carry blood up to your brain. Plaque can narrow them, and fragments can break away and travel upward. A carotid ultrasound finds this.

Clots that form inside the heart

An irregular rhythm, a diseased valve, or a weakened pumping chamber can let a clot form in the heart itself. That clot can travel to the brain. A carotid ultrasound cannot see any of this. An echocardiogram can.

This is why the two are sold together. Screening the neck alone answers half the question and leaves the other half unexamined. The combination is not a discount on two scans — it is the difference between a partial answer and a complete one.

What Is Included

What Each Scan Shows

Carotid Duplex with IMT — about 30 minutes

A painless scan of the arteries on each side of your neck. It measures plaque, narrowing, and the thickness of the artery wall itself (intima-media thickness) — one of the earliest measurable signs of cardiovascular disease, often visible years before a blockage forms. More on carotid ultrasound →

Echocardiogram — about 45 minutes

A moving ultrasound of your heart. It measures ejection fraction (how much blood the heart pushes out with each beat), valve function, chamber size, and wall motion — the structural findings that create clot risk. More on echocardiograms →

Both are performed in the same visit by the same sonographer, and both are read by the same cardiologist — so the findings are interpreted together rather than in isolation.

What Happens

Your Visit, Step by Step

About one hour, start to finish. No needles, no radiation, no preparation.

Before you come

Eat normally and take your medications as usual. Wear a low-collar shirt, or something easy to change out of — the echo needs access to the chest.

The carotid scan — about 30 minutes

You lie back. Warm gel and a small probe on each side of the neck. You will hear the blood flow through the Doppler; most people find it oddly reassuring.

The echocardiogram — about 45 minutes

The probe moves across the chest and under the ribs. You will be asked to roll onto your left side and hold your breath briefly a few times. You can watch your own heart on the screen.

A cardiologist reads both studies

Not a technician, and not software. A board-certified cardiologist whose lab holds IAC accreditation in both Echocardiography and Vascular Testing.

Your report, within 24–48 hours

A written report with the measurements included — yours to keep and to hand to your own physician.

What We Detect

Conditions This Package
Can Identify

Combining these studies gives your cardiologist a comprehensive view that no single scan can provide.

The Honest Part

If We Find Something

Most people screen and get reassurance. Some do not — and that is the point of screening. Here is exactly what happens in that case.

The Numbers

Package vs Buying Separately

Separately — $794

Carotid Duplex with IMT at $397, echocardiogram at $397. Two appointments, two trips, two reports read in isolation.

As a package — $697

One appointment, about an hour. Both studies read together by the same cardiologist, in one report. $97 less, and a day of your life back.

No referral. No insurance. No prior authorization. The price you see is the price you pay, and it is due at the appointment — HSA and FSA cards are accepted.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why not just get the carotid scan?

Because it only looks at one of the two places a stroke commonly starts. A carotid ultrasound examines the arteries in your neck. It cannot see inside the heart, where clots form from irregular rhythms, valve disease, or a weakened pumping chamber. If you screen only the neck, a cardiac source stays invisible.

I feel completely fine. Is this worth $697?

Carotid plaque and reduced heart function are both typically silent until they are not. Screening exists precisely for people without symptoms — once symptoms appear, you are no longer screening, you are diagnosing. If you have no risk factors at all, a single scan may be enough; this package is aimed at people with age, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, smoking history, or family history in the picture.

Do I need a referral in Maine?

No. You can book directly. No referral, no prior authorization, no insurance approval. If something is found, your report gives your physician everything needed to act on it.

Will insurance cover it?

This is a self-pay service, paid at the appointment. Many patients use HSA or FSA funds, which typically cover diagnostic screening. At $697 for two studies with a cardiologist read, it is generally less than the deductible on the equivalent hospital imaging.

How long does it take, and does it hurt?

About an hour for both scans. Neither uses needles or radiation — ultrasound is the same technology used in pregnancy imaging. The only discomfort most people report is cool gel and being asked to hold their breath a few times during the echo.
