EF measures how effectively the left ventricle pumps blood with each beat. Reduced EF (below 50–55%) significantly increases the risk of cardiac complications during and after major surgery. Anesthesiologists use this number to plan intraoperative monitoring and fluid management.
Significant aortic stenosis, mitral regurgitation, or other valve abnormalities must be identified before surgery. Severe valvular disease may require modification of the surgical approach, additional pre-operative intervention, or elevated anesthesia precautions. An echo is the only non-invasive way to directly assess valve function.
Regional wall motion abnormalities can indicate prior myocardial infarction or areas of reduced coronary blood flow — important context for surgical risk stratification.
