Leg Vein Ultrasound Cost

What a venous duplex of the legs costs in Maine, without a referral.

The Short Answer

What a venous ultrasound costs here

A venous duplex ultrasound of the legs at BlackPoint is $397 at our Falmouth imaging center, or $597 on-site in Southern Maine. That is the full price, including the cardiologist review.

We publish the price because most places do not. If you have called a hospital and been told the cost depends on your plan, your deductible and which department does the billing, that is the difference.

The Study

What a venous ultrasound actually is

A venous duplex scans the veins of the leg for clot and for valves that no longer close. It is the study used when a leg is swollen, aching, or has visible varicose veins. It takes 45 to 60 minutes.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a leg vein ultrasound cost without insurance?

$397 at our Falmouth imaging center, or $597 if we come to you in Southern Maine. That includes the scan, the board-certified cardiologist read and the report.

Do I need a referral for a venous ultrasound?

No. You can book it directly.

My leg is swollen — should I wait for an appointment?

A newly swollen, painful leg should be assessed promptly, and sudden shortness of breath alongside it is an emergency. If that is your situation, go to an emergency department rather than booking a screening appointment. We are a scheduled imaging service, not an emergency provider.

Is this the same scan used for varicose veins?

Yes. A venous duplex maps both clot and valve function, which is the information a vein specialist needs before treating varicose veins.

How quickly are results available?

24 to 48 hours. If a study shows an acute deep vein clot, you are contacted directly the same day.
