A painless, 30-minute peripheral arterial duplex ultrasound performed at your home in Cape Elizabeth by an ARDMS-certified cardiovascular sonographer. We evaluate blood flow through the arteries of your legs — detecting blockages, narrowing, and circulation problems — the same hospital-grade imaging, without the hospital. Board-certified cardiologist report delivered within 24–48 hours.
Clinical Indications
A peripheral arterial duplex ultrasound evaluates blood flow through the arteries of your legs — from the groin to the ankles. It is the primary non-invasive tool for detecting peripheral artery disease (PAD), a condition where plaque narrows the arteries and restricts circulation to your lower extremities. If you experience leg pain when walking that improves with rest, cold feet, numbness or tingling in your legs, weak or absent pulses, or non-healing wounds on your feet or toes, arterial duplex is the study your physician needs to assess the severity and location of any blockages.
PAD affects an estimated 8-12 million Americans, with prevalence increasing sharply after age 50. Major risk factors include smoking (the single strongest risk factor), diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and family history of vascular disease. PAD is often underdiagnosed because patients attribute leg pain to aging or arthritis. Left untreated, severe PAD can lead to critical limb ischemia — tissue loss, gangrene, and amputation. Early detection through arterial duplex allows for medical management, exercise therapy, and when necessary, intervention before irreversible damage occurs.
Cape Elizabeth residents have limited options for arterial duplex imaging without entering the hospital system. The nearest hospital-based labs are at Maine Medical Center (Portland) and Mercy Hospital (Portland) — both requiring a physician referral, insurance pre-authorization, and often a multi-week wait for scheduling.
What We're Looking For
Identifies narrowing in the femoral, popliteal, and tibial arteries. Stenosis severity is graded by velocity changes and waveform patterns at each level.
Arterial duplex provides anatomic detail that complements ABI screening — showing exactly where blockages are located and how severe they are.
Normal leg arteries produce a triphasic waveform. Monophasic or dampened waveforms indicate significant upstream stenosis or occlusion.
When a main artery is blocked, the body develops detour pathways. Identifying collateral vessels tells us how long a blockage has been developing.
Evaluates the three arteries below the knee that supply the foot. Adequate tibial runoff is critical for wound healing and determines treatment options.
For patients with prior bypass grafts or stents, duplex monitors for restenosis — recurrent narrowing that can develop within months to years.
